Running head: FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT PAPER
In the business world today, it is necessary to have good management skills in order to succeed. Some of these skills include being able to communicate effectively, work well with others, good listener, and open minded. Having these types of skills will help to work well with those you are managing in an organization. Management is defined as the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals (Bateman, Snell, 2009). In today there is lots of competition in the business world so it??™s necessary to have good managers. In this paper, the four functions of management will be discussed and applied to the organization I was working for. The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
When I was working as a dispatcher in a transportation company I had to work with all four functions of management. I had to work with about twenty drivers of the company. My duties were to look for loads and negotiate the price loads with the brokers that were selling the loads. After I had the load, I would dispatch the driver with all the necessary information so the driver can go pick up and deliver. In order for the business to succeed the company needed to give good customer service. Good customer service would be picking up the load on time and delivering on time with no problems. I would go in at six in the morning, and the first thing I would do is start to plan my day. In the text book, planning is defined as specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals (Bateman, Snell, 2009). The first thing I would do when I would start to work is list all the driver I had and start to call each one of them to see what type of load they wanted and how far they wanted to go. The company would pick up and deliver from coast to coast dry freight.
Once I knew what driver where available and where they wanted to go, I would post them on the internet and start to look for available loads. Once I was done looking for loads and I had every drivers load, I would start to dispatch them with the information. After I was done dispatching my planning wasn??™t done yet. The part of planning was to talk with the driver and see if the driver wanted to come home straight when they deliver or wanted to do a few other loads and then come back home. Once I knew what the driver wanted I would look for loads around the area of the delivery. I would usually plan a whole week of work in one day so I would meet all my goals. After I was done with the planning, I would start to organize all the drivers??™ information. I get the drivers load information and put it in a folder which had their name and load number. Also in that folder there would be how much the driver was going to be paid. Everything in that folder had to be organized, because we had night dispatchers that would take that information in case a driver needed during none business hours.
Leading was an important part of my job in the company. I needed to lead each driver to their destination with no problems. In the text book leading is defined as stimulating people to be high performers. Some of the things that I would do to motivate my driver were to add like one hundred dollars to their load if they picked up on time and deliver on time. Another thing that I would do if they liked the load they did I would offer it to them again; or if I had the same load the next week I would save the load for the driver that did the best. Last was the part of controlling, I would work on this throughout my whole working day. In the text controlling is defined as monitoring (Bateman, Snell, 2009). I would have someone help me this part, because I was so busy sometimes negotiating loads and talking to my customers about their loads. Part of the controlling part was to know what time the driver picked up the load, where the driver was at during the day and what time did they deliver. When I had all that information I would update my customer so they would know what was going on with their product. For example, if I had a driver pick up a load in Los Angeles CA and the delivery was in New York NY, it would take the driver like five days to get there. During those five days I would call the driver everyday and check the location of the driver making sure the driver was on track for the delivery. In order to keep our customers happy we need to do an excellent job in controlling.
These four functions of management are important because they help keep a business run well. When there a lack of work any area of these functions the business will not succeed properly and the company will lose customers and employees. It is also important to keep updated in all types of management skills and any other type of leadership material. I believe that the best managers are always updated with what is going on in the company.
